The Client Security Board and its related Fund were established by the Minnesota Supreme Court to aid people who suffer a loss because of dishonest conduct on the part of a lawyer during the course of an attorney-client relationship in this state. Typical losses include various forms of theft such as stealing settlements or other funds given to the lawyer, failure to refund fees when the lawyer performs little to no services, or borrowing money from a client without the intention or ability to pay it back.
The Fund may reimburse up to $150,000 for the loss of money or property resulting from lawyer dishonesty, but does not cover losses due to incompetence, neglect or fee disputes.
To qualify for reimbursement, you must be able to show that the money or property was given to the lawyer and that the loss was caused by the lawyer’s dishonest conduct.
